Appearance
Derdas carries the heavy, unyielding presence of a man shaped by mountain stone and subterranean heat. Aged forty-two, his face is hard-bitten and heavily weathered, marked by the deep furrows of battle and the harsh elements of the high plateaus. Sharp, stern eyes cut from beneath a furrowed brow, framed by a broad, graying beard and a balding crown of steel-gray hair.
His armor is a patchwork of scarred plate and dark chainmail, stripped of ornate nobility and reinforced purely for survival. Slung over his right shoulder is Basaltes, a massive, unpolished cleaver forged from dark obsidian steel and clay. Resting heavily on his left side is a broad, pale pauldron fashioned directly from the skull of a soot-serpent—its blackened, hollow eye socket faintly smoldering with green sulfurous fumes, a silent testament to the boiling deeps he survived. Every piece of his gear bears the scuffs, coal-dust, and battle-gouge of a veteran commander who commands from the front line.
Backstory
A battle-scarred veteran commander returns from exile to reclaim the scorched ruins of Megalorach and slay the ancient, subterranean river-serpent that drowned his homeland in black fire.
Before he was known as the Flamebringer, Derdas was the supreme vanguard commander of Kaliani, the ancient stone capital of the Elimiot Realm. Perched high upon the terraced slopes of Megalorach, Kaliani was famous across the high plateaus for its grand stoas, subterranean rock-carved cisterns, and deep mountain mines.
For generations, the kingdom flourished along the banks of the mighty Aliak River. But deep within the subterranean caverns beneath the Khtenor hills—where miners dug for black iron and rich chrome ores—they broke through to a ancient, forgotten abyss. There slept Ophis the Ashen Serpent, an ancient aquatic behemoth born of boiling subterranean springs and burning coal seams.
When Ophis awakened, the Aliak River boiled over, flooding the lower valleys while a wall of scalding mud and black fire washed over the citadel. Derdas stood alone at the great stone gates of Megalorach to buy time for his people to escape, driving an iron siege spear into the serpent's jaw. Though he forced the beast back into the subterranean depths, he was caught in a wave of boiling, sulfuric steam—searing his flesh and burning away the hair atop his head forever.
Burdened by the destruction of the acropolis, Derdas went into self-imposed exile. For years, he roamed the high plateaus, taking on brutal work in the dark mines. The relentless labor and ruthless battles hardened him into an unstoppable force. He forged his identity anew—taking up Basaltes, the Obsidian Cleaver, a massive, heavy-bladed weapon forged from dark volcanic stone and tempered in dark-pigmented clay to pay homage to the archaic master-potters of old Kaliani, and fitting his armor with a massive serpent-skull pauldron forged from Ophis’s own brood to withstand boiling heat.
Now, as the waters of the Aliak turn black once more and the earth quakes along the Hassean Crags, Derdas has returned to the burnt ruins of Megalorach to finish the fight and slay the serpent for good.
Personality
- Grim
- Fiercely disciplined
- Unshakable Stoicism
- Blunt Honesty
- Patient and methodical
Ideals
- Unyielding Pragmatism: Magic and grand promises fail when stone collapses; only honest steel, heavy clay, and relentless discipline endure.
- Honor the Bedrock: The mountains and rivers give us life and coal, but taking more than our share awakens ancient slumbers. Respect the earth’s limits.
Flaws
- Inflexible Stubbornness: He refuses to adapt to modern political maneuvering or esoteric methods, viewing any tactic outside brute force, strategy, and grounded steel as foolish trickery.
- Survivors’ Guilt: Deep down, he believes he should have perished in the collapse of Kaliani alongside his fallen vanguard, making him recklessly quick to take the deadliest line of defense himself.
- Cold Detachment: Years of fighting loss after loss have made him grim and emotionally distant. He struggles to offer comfort, speaking only in orders and harsh truths.
Goals
- Hunt down Ophis the Ashen Serpent and sink Basaltes into its gullet to avenge the fallen citadel of Kaliani.
Fears
- The Earth Swallowing the Rest: A terrifying memory of the ground opening up beneath his feet, fearing he will live to see the remaining survivors of Elimiotis dragged down into the dark abyss.
- Dying an Unfinished Vengeance: The constant dread that age or injury will claim him before Basaltes meets the hide of Ophis one last time.
Quirks
- Instinctively rubs soot or volcanic ash between his thumb and forefinger to judge the dampness and draft of any subterranean space before entering.
Equipment
- Basaltes, the Obsidian Cleaver
- Scarred Iron Vanguard Plate
